The Needs

Jail and Sheriff's Office

Inmate Capacity

The current jail has enough beds on paper (155 in the jail and 144 in the work release center) and houses on average between 160-210 inmates. However, the issue is not the number of beds.

The problem is that the buildings do not have enough properly designed space to safely separate inmates based on classification requirements. Jails must keep certain groups apart, but the current layout makes that difficult and often not possible. As a result, different classifications are sometimes housed together, which increases safety risks for both inmates and staff and makes daily operations more challenging.

When the jail reaches capacity, overflow inmates are transported to the Work Release Center (Huber) across town, where they are placed in a dorm-style setting that also does not allow for proper classification. Additionally, this creates operational strain, as staff must transport inmates back and forth for court appearances and other needs, taking time and resources away from regular operations.
