The Needs
Jail and Sheriff's Office
County Liability
When a county jail can’t properly classify inmates or lacks adequate facilities, it creates serious safety and financial risks. Inmates who need more supervision may end up with those who are less risky, which can lead to fights, injuries, or other incidents.

Moving inmates outside their regular housing areas or to the Work Release Center (Huber) used for overflow inmates when classifications can’t be met, adds even more risk. These transfers require extra staff, careful coordination, and strict security. A mistake could result in injuries, property damage, or legal liability, all of which are costly to taxpayers.

Inadequate facilities also make it harder for staff to monitor inmates, safely move them, and prevent conflicts before they happen. When a jail can’t properly separate or watch inmates, it puts both staff and inmates in danger and exposes the county to accidents, lawsuits, and emergency costs.
