The Needs

Library

Facility Design

The current library building is dated and no longer meets the needs of a modern-day library. In addition to aging finishes and layout limitations, the facility is facing structural, safety, and accessibility concerns including:

  • Ongoing water leaks from the roof, walls, and floors are creating mold concerns and could damage books and materials.

  • Many of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems are at or beyond their expected lifespan, making repairs costly and unreliable.

  • The roof is sagging, exterior walls are cracking, and roof flashing is damaged - signs the building envelope is failing.

  • The elevator equipment has reached the end of its service life, and some exit (egress) lighting no longer works, with replacement parts unavailable.

  • The main level bathroom and elevator do not meet ADA standards. The nicest bathroom is located in the basement and is not accessible to everyone.

  • The current library building is hard to navigate and not very user-friendly. Typically, visitors enter in the rear entrance due to the parking restrictions whereas the main entrance is located on the opposite end of the building, which can be confusing. There’s no clear sense of direction, and the main service desk is located in the middle of the library instead of near the entrance. This makes it difficult for people to know where to go or who to ask for help. In addition, the building does not have clear wayfinding signs. Without proper signage, visitors can struggle to find books, meeting rooms, restrooms, or other services.

  • There is not enough space for staff, community programs, meetings, technology needs, or proper storage.

  • Limited space and flexibility for collections.

Modern libraries serve as community hubs offering technology access, flexible meeting and program spaces, study areas, and welcoming environments for all ages. The current facility’s layout and infrastructure cannot support those expectations.
