The Needs

Gov Center and Judicial

Third Judgeship

Why Is a Third Judge Needed?

Shawano County’s caseload has grown to the point that the State of Wisconsin has identified our county as one of the highest priorities in the state for an additional judge. After reviewing case volume and workload, the State determined Shawano County qualifies for a third judgeship. Pending State Legislative approval of AB514, Shawano County is expected to receive a third judge by August 2028, following the Spring election.

However, there is an important condition: If Shawano County cannot provide appropriate space and accommodations for the new judge and staff, the State may move on and award the judgeship to the next qualifying county.

Why More Space Is Required

There is not enough room in the existing building to accommodate the additional staff that comes with a third judge. Adding a judge is not just adding one person. A new judgeship requires:

  • A courtroom that meets State space standards

  • Office space for the judge

  • Workspace for court staff

  • Jury deliberation rooms

  • Secure areas for defendants and law enforcement

  • Public waiting areas

Currently, Shawano County has two juried courtrooms in the existing Courthouse, which are dealing with operational and safety issues. The County is already short of space and is using the County Board Room (instead of a courtroom) 3-4 times a week for various cases.

Why This Matters

Receiving a third judge would help:

  • Reduce case backlogs

  • Shorten wait times for hearings and trials

  • Improve efficiency for families, victims, law enforcement, and attorneys

  • Ensure timely access to justice

But to secure this opportunity, Shawano County must be prepared to provide adequate courtroom and office space that meets State requirements.
